Essentials of Time Management and Techniques for Students

As a student, time is your most valuable resource. Between attending classes, completing assignments, studying for exams, and participating in extracurricular activities, it can be challenging to manage your time effectively. However, with the right strategies and tools, you can learn to prioritize tasks, eliminate distractions, and make the most of every minute.

But If you are finding it difficult to focus on what you are studying for a long time or complete your daily study goals/ task Then what you need is to learn how to effectively study with time management.

In this blog article, we'll share some tips and tricks for mastering time management as a student.

 1. Understanding Time Management
First and foremost, it's essential to understand the importance of time management. Not only does it help you meet deadlines and reduce stress levels, but it also allows you to pursue other interests and hobbies outside of academics. By managing your time wisely, you can strike a healthy balance between work and play and enjoy a more fulfilling school/ college experience.

 2. Identify the priorities and setting goals
Analyse and understand what is truly important to you. Whether it is scoring high in a particular subject, finishing the assignments or completing a project on time , learning a new skill? Recognize your priorities and set the goal smartly. When the goal set is clear it will motivate you and give a clarity to achieve it. You can use the SMART model to plan an effective and realistic time management goals for yourself.

The acronym stands for:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant, and
Time-Specific

The short term goals you have set should align with your longterm. I.e., career path , ambitions etc

 3. Collect all tasks and prioritise them and Make Note of Deadlines
Students should understand that Not all tasks are equally important. They can use various methods to categorise tasks into urgent and important, important but not urgent, etc. This helps in determining which task should be prioritised first.
They can consider using planners and organisers to plan the same.

Students are often given large assignments that can seem daunting at first. To make them more manageable, break them into smaller parts and schedule time to complete each part. They can Start with Small Tasks  and Break Up Large Tasks. They can use the Pomodoro method of time management to effectively do it.

What is the Pomodoro Technique ?

The Pomodoro technique is an effective way of effectively using time management to finish your tasks.
It helps the students to effectively deal with time while performing a task /work and also helps in higher productivity.

This technique involves breaking your study sessions into 25-minute intervals, separated by short breaks. After four Pomodoros (or four study sessions), you take a longer break. This method helps you stay focused and avoid burnout, as you're working in short, manageable bursts rather than trying to power through long study sessions at once!

How to use the Pomodoro Technique
The steps involved in a Pomodoro technique are :
 • First Identify the task you need to complete. For example , this could be a set of study portions or assignments that need to be completed.
 • when you begin the task use a clock and set the timer for 25 minutes. You can now divide a bigger task into small chunks to be completed within 25 minutes.
 • Focus properly without distractions and Work dedicatedly in this assigned time to complete your task.
 • Once the time slot of 25 minutes is over and the alarm sounds, take a break for 4-5 minutes. Try to stay within the break time by not exceeding.
 • Now repeat the process again for the next 25 mins with 4-5 minutes as break time. This can be repeated for 3-4 times back to back.
 • Once the process is repeated and the task is completed, take a longer break for like 30 minutes before you move to your next task.

This will ensure that with regular short breaks in between and being focussed during the study/task time, your task is completed within the stipulated time and also with a better outcome.

What Makes the Pomodoro Technique So Effective?

The reason why this technique is effective is the tendency to ward off / avoid / fend off the negative thought patterns. For most of us an activity consuming more time duration and difficult projects makes us feel scary.
On the contrary , binge-watching our favorite web series or programs creates more happiness and making it difficult to turn it off and instead turn to the task at hand.
Pomodoro technique tackles these emotional conflicts at their roots and lets you develop healthier habits that work for your betterment in the long run.

Regularly review and update your list

 1. Continuously evaluate and monitor your progress . How is your progress in relation to your goals. Is there any deviation ? What can be done to improve. Etc
 2. Adjust and refine your goals if it is required
 3. Stay aligned with your long-term goals : Regularly reassess your daily and weekly objectives to ensure that they are still in alignment with your longterm goals.

Create a schedule

Another helpful tip is creating a study schedule - this can help you stay organized and prioritize tasks based on deadlines and importance level!

Timeblocking is an effective technique for time management for students.

Time blocking is a time management method that asks you to divide your day into blocks of time. Each block is dedicated to accomplishing a specific task or group of tasks, and only those specific tasks.

It is nothing but practice of planning out every moment of your day into sections or "blocks" of time, assigning specific tasks or activities to each block. It creates a visual representation of your day, helping you stay committed to your tasks and minimizing distractions.

The key to this method is prioritizing your task list in advance and be dedicated review it weekly without fail. At the end of the day If any deviation is found and any new tasks have popped up it has to be adjusted accordingly for the rest of the week.
All you need to do is follow your time blocked schedule. If you get off-task or distracted, simply look at your schedule and get back to whichever task you blocked off time for.

By implementing these strategies into your daily routine you can start mastering time management!
